POST BEGUN SUNDAY 4TH OCTOBER 2026 0943HRS BST
Wait. What? 4th October 2026?! What the bloody hell happened to 2026?? 2027 looms in the very near future (God willing), what the hell happened to 2026?!
Ankle update, as of 9th September I am in the so-called walking boot which I am coming to hate completely so fully understand why my fellow tri-mall broken ankle sufferers regularly post photos of the boot bonfires once they've 'graduated' to the ankle brace stage. Sheez that boot is a pita and I wish I were still in a plaster cast.
I am allowed to 'partial weight bearing as tolerated' (hahahahaha, tolerated, hahahahaha). It is not going well but I did manage eight steps clinging to the Zimmer frame before my hip and backside muscles screamed loudly 'PLEASE STOP!'. Yeah, I did the walking thing without benefit of one of those expensive shoe leveler things strapped to my trainer - AmazonUK to the rescue, the leveler arrived the next day and actually does level my 'good' foot with the one in the boot so now I can manage a whole ten steps on the Z-frame. yea
But the three times a day exercises to be done with the boot off and my ankle supported on the sofa or footstool are going well-ish. Yesterday I managed to turn my ankle to the right a wee bit further than previous attempts. yea
SIDEBAR MOMENT OF PEDANTRY
'Yea' is proper, 'yay' is 'I'm so modern I disdain old-fashioned things like spelling words correctly and yeah, I say 'haitch' instead of 'aitch' 'cuz I'm so hip and modern.'
Newsflash, Skippy - writing 'yay' and saying 'haitch' is pure ghetto and 'down with the kids innit' - GAG and ye'll nae catch me EVER doing any of it.
The consultants think if I continue progressing as well as I am so far (doesn't feel very progressed to me!) I should be walking - with a cane - by Christmas. oh. joy. Still, if I'd had surgery instead of the 'conservative' treatment, they tell me I wouldn't be walking 'normally' until spring 2027. I cannot say enough about how much I appreciate my consultant choosing conservative over surgery!
OK, yes, having broken that ankle twice before (once in '75 and again in 2010) means recovery this time is going to be a little more tricky and lengthy and I've been warned tennis and hill walking are off my activities list for the rest of my life. Apparently I'll be lucky if I can manage to dance anything more exuberant than a quiet waltz. I am currently racking my brain to work out which if any sports I can enjoy now. dammit
